Our History - IFRJ

The Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio de Janeiro was originally born as Chemistry Technical School in World War II, during Getúlio Vargas's government, as part of the federal net of industrial schools, due to the fact that, at that time, industrial chemistry was of national strategic interest.
The Institution started its activities in 1943 with just 24 students in the class of Industrial Chemistry Technical Course, inside the old National School of Chemistry from Brazil University (now UFRJ). In 1946, the course was transferred to the facilities of the National Technical School, today CEFET Celso Suckow da Fonseca-RJ, where it remained for 39 years. In 1959, it became an Educational Autarchy.
Between 1965 and 2008, the Institution had different denominations: Chemistry Federal Technical School of Guanabara, Chemistry Federal Technical School of Rio de Janeiro and Federal Center of Chemistry Technological Education of Nilópolis/RJ.
In December 2008, the nearly 70-year-old Institution was transformed, by federal decree, into Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio de Janeiro (IFRJ), encompassing at the moment the following Campi: Duque de Caxias, Nilópolis, Nilo Peçanha-Pinheiral, Paracambi, Realengo, Rio de Janeiro, São Gonçalo and Volta Redonda, and the Campi-to-be, but already in action, Arraial do Cabo, Engenheiro Paulo de Frontin and Mesquita.
The IFRJ develops activities in different levels of professional education, from workers' initial qualification, to high school and technical education, Technology Undergraduation, Undergraduation, Teachers' Formation, to Graduation lato and stricto sensu. The Institution also operates in the areas of social inclusion of adults and young adults, marginalized populations and handicapped people, and develops scientific research in various fields aiming at technological innovation and at propagation and popularization of science.
